The two catering staff- A full time cook and her assistant, who are both young mothers and working towards their NVQ's in catering, understand the importance of providing healthily, nutritionally balanced meals to young children.
This encouragement is also endorsed by the Headmistress and her staff, who work in tandem with NCS catering staff, to educate the children in the necessity of healthy eating.
Emphasis is on Homely, nutritionally balanced menus, meeting or exceeding the requirements of Government Legislation.
Since the introduction of fresh locally sourced (where possible) meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, the uptake in meals has continued to rise.
The school has invested monies, on upgrading the dining room facilities, giving the dining room a bright, happy and friendly atmosphere, where the children enjoy relaxing to eat and talk!.
Within the kitchen, new equipment has been installed to cater for the evolving methods of food production and service.
The school offers regular invitations to Parents, Guardians and Grandparents to eat lunch with the children. The "Myth" of school meals of old is now becoming just that A myth, and family members can see for themselves ,the great strides which have taken school meals into the 21 st century.
Last term the pupils were offered the opportunity to cook for themselves in " Cooking Workshops", organised by NCS catering staff. This hands on approach was a great success, the children cooking and eating their own pizzas. another big hit with the children are the "Birthday Party " lunches, where the children can invite up to 12 of their school friends to share a special birthday lunch.
Hunstanton is proof that, where the school staff and the catering staff believe in the same morals of diet and dietary education, then from a young age children understand the benefits related to a healthy, balanced, nutritional diet. |
